The historic flowering behaviour of River Red?gum and Black Box in a flooding forest

River Red-gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and Black Box (E. largiflorens) are the dominant tree species of Barmah forest, Victoria; part a floodplain ecosystem which has been identified as being under threat due to reduced frequency duration altered timing flooding associated with river regulation, water extraction drought. The regime plays significant role in phenology both these species. Hence, establishing past flowering behaviour using long-term records (1934 1973) provides historical baseline against current future can be judged. was more consistent its flowering, an annual failure recurrence interval 1 36 years less compared 9.25 for Red-gum. also intense flowered longer (4.0 ± 1.9 months 2.1 1.4 months), period encompassing Red-gum’s. two therefore synchronous. displayed evidence intensely every second year some dependence on previous year’s flowering; this absent Box. influence intensity over 40-year indicated that 10 out 13 inundation greater than 6 depressive effect while 7 no 5 enhances intensity. This is so However, recurring event study, therefore, it difficult isolate single flood flowering.
